As a result of a South Carolina Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Jumper Station VFD located at 1603 Basil Rd, Swansea, received a new 2500 gallon tanker truck on Thursday, April 13.
This new tanker pumps 2500 gallons of water in approximately one minute and twenty-five seconds and reload at the rate of 1500 gallons per minute. This is one of seven tankers Calhoun County has received or will receive, two remaining, under this grant.
Calhoun Ledger held a Facebook Live interview with Jeff Price, Fire Coordinator for Calhoun County Rural Fire Commission, just after he picked up and delivered the new tanker from Safe Industries/Fire Equipment Sales & Services (FES) out of Sumter, SC.
Mr. Price had a long list of people he wanted to thank for their efforts to make this happen.
Among them were:
Lower Savannah Council of Governments (LSCOG) which provided most of the funding through a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and especially Jeff Dewortz of LSCOG who worked with our county officials to make this possible.
And the following folks who were instrumental in this process:
Deputy Administrator Ted Felder
CCRFD Commissioner Terry Wilder
E911 Coordinator Elaine Golden
Calhoun County Procurement Officer Boyce Till
Jumper Station Fire Chief John Graves
and the many volunteers that polled area residents to get the data necessary to apply for the CDBG
Having the right equipment and trained personnel to respond when needed is vitally important to the safety of our county residents. These tankers are just one part of the equation. Trained personnel is the other part. The county needs volunteers at every fire station. And, as Mr. Price said, "You don't have to be young." There are different jobs that have to be done to fight fires. Not all volunteers actually "fight the fire."
If you have an interest in helping by becoming a volunteer fireman, please reach out to Mr. Price or one of the fire stations.
