National EMS Week: May 21-27, 2017 'Always In Service'

Sunday, May 21, 2017 kicked off National EMS Week which is dedicated to recognizing those who are part of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) community: First Responders, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), and Paramedics. Established in 1974, by President Gerald Ford, EMS Week is also a week of education for both EMS workers and the communities they serve.

This years theme is "Always in Service."

A memorial service was held on Sunday at the South Carolina E.M.S. Memorial located at 1736 Old State Road, Gaston. This service was held to remember those EMS workers who lost their lives in 2016. These were not all service connected losses but they are losses none-the-less. And for the men and women who are "always in service' losing a fellow EMS worker truly wounds the heart.

A number of bike riders with SC EMS Memorial Bike Ride took to the roads on Friday, May 19th, and rode from Florence to Sandy Run, about 209 miles total. They did this to raise awareness of the dangers of an EMS career, to honor their fallen brothers and sisters, and to promote a healthy lifestyle.

A great deal of thanks is owed to those who give so much of themselves to help us when we are in need. Take the time this week to send a card to your local EMS unit. Maybe even pick-up pizza and soda; that would be nice too. Say thank you and shake their hand when you see them in the community.

Let them know how much you appreciate all they do!
