Calhoun County Honey Jubilee & Farm Fest Kicks off with Farm-to-Table Dinner Featuring Certified

The Honey Jubilee Farm-to-Table Dinner and Lecture kicked off three days of pollinator focus on Thursday, June 1, at Holly Oak Farms in St. Matthews, SC.

Savannah Bee Company sponsored a mead tasting during the social time. Mead is not considered a wine or a beer but it is a fermented honey beverage that is known to have been consumed by a number of ancient cultures. The oldest known use was in China approximately 7000 years ago.

The dinner featured locally grown Certified SC Grown foods prepared by Dupre Catering & Events with an emphasis on how pollinators made those foods possible. From the honey-glazed ham and skewered chicken to the collards, grits, squash, and salad; each dish was an explosion of flavors that left the attendees with a very satisfied palate.

During the sweet course at the end of the meal, Dr. Jennifer Tsuruda, Apiculture Specialist from Clemson University, gave a humorous look at "The Power of Bees and Pollinators." It was quite obvious Dr. Tsuruda enjoys these necessary though sometimes unattractive insects. She shared that she had pet cockroaches as a child. Take heart parents with children who have "odd" interests!

The Honey Jubilee Farm-to-Table Dinner & Lecture was a huge success. This will certainly be a repeat feature of next year's event.

The 2017 Honey Jubilee & Farm Fest continues on Friday, June 2, with a series of workshops held at the Calhoun County Library. These workshops will be focused on beekeeping and gardening.

Saturday, June 3, will complete the three-day event with the 2017 Honey Jubilee & Farm Fest. It is a FREE festival hosted by the Calhoun County Library, the Town of Saint Matthews, and Calhoun County to promote farmers, bees and other pollinators in Saint Matthews, SC.

This inaugural event will feature bluegrass and gospel music, food trucks, locally grown produce, specialty food products, arts and crafts vendors and of course bee related products and honey. Come learn about agriculture, beekeeping, and the importance of bees and other pollinators. A special Kid Zone area will provide activities for children.
