A Budding Passion Turned Into Business Success For Native Daughter: Chanda Kempson-Brock

Imagine yourself a young girl, laughing and talking with your friends in the halls of Calhoun County High School. The year is 1987 and graduation is just a month away. Your sense of excitement is nearly overwhelming. Life is changing; one chapter ending and another beginning.

This was Chanda Kempson-Brock thirty years ago. She was full of expectation knowing that it was the beginning of 'being Chanda.' But little did she know what that meant and where her life would lead her.

Fast forward to 2008, twenty-one years since graduation, Chanda started designing greeting cards and sewing ribbon on them, igniting a passion for sewing. She built skill into her passion by watching YouTube videos, reading books, and staying up late at night laughing, talking, and sewing with friends.

She became interested in making children items and started designing bibs, burp cloths, little girl’s dresses and boy bow ties; selling these items in over 10 Georgia boutiques. This passion for sewing, once released, could not be harnessed for Chanda. “Once I started sewing I was passionate about it and wanted to do more,” exclaims Chanda, “I started designing men’s bow ties and pocket squares. Since my products were for men I decided to name my company J Kempson Styles, in honor of my father Jake Kimpson, Sr.”

Chanda explains, “I started receiving requests for women’s items. Since I didn’t know how to read patterns I started with head bands. That really didn’t last. Then one day I decided I was going to make skirts. They were a big hit!” Her skirts and bow ties have been shipped to nearly every state in the US and to Canada, Singapore, Greece, Poland and United Kingdom.

While all of Chanda’s creations are unique and have a story of their own to tell one creation stands out in her memory. A groom in Singapore ordered a special bow tie for his wedding. The newly married couple shared with Chanda the link to their wedding video in which the bow tie was spotlighted. (You can watch that video here: https://vimeo.com/125876999.) That same bow tie was featured in a magazine as part of a destination wedding.

It is now 2017 and Chanda truly believes this is her God given talent. Her words of wisdom, “I would like to encourage everyone that has a dream, a passion for doing something that you love… Do It. It doesn’t matter your age or where you’re starting from, you can do it!”

August 19th marked “Full Time for One Year” for Chanda doing what she loves to do. On that day she celebrated with a Free Skirt Giveaway. Another CCHS graduate, Windy Keller Nicholson, was the lucky winner! Chanda understands that its her “amazing customers” that have made it possible for her to pursue her passion for sewing.

But it doesn’t hurt when the world’s largest internet-based retailer seeks you out. Chanda explains, “It’s such a funny story how I got on Amazon. They contacted me. I thought it was someone playing a joke. I called and it was really Amazon. They worked closely with me to set-up my items on the website.”

You can find and order Chanda's creations on these platforms: Amazon, Chanda also markets on Facebook, Instagram and Periscope, www.JKempson.com, and Etsy.
