Sandy Run Ruritan Club: Christmas Banquet & Officer Installation; 'Community People Meeting

Sandy Run Ruritan Club held its annual Christmas Banquet and Installation of Officers for the upcoming service year on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at the Sandy Run Community Center.

“Ruritan is a national organization dedicated to improving communities and building a better America through Fellowship, Goodwill and Community

Service.” The Sandy Run Ruritan Club has been busy fulfilling this mission for the past 27 years.

All through 2017, Sandy Run Ruritan Club was active in the Sandy Run community in many ways. Here are just a few:

  • Assembled and distributed ‘Christmas in July’ baskets to senior citizens and shut-ins;

  • Participating in and sponsoring Adopt-a-Highway litter pickups along a 2.5 mile stretch of Hwy 176 and, on December 16, 2017, along the Christmas Parade route in preparation for the parade that will be held on December 23;

  • Contributed Thanksgiving Dinners and canned goods to families in need;

  • Adopting several families for Christmas;

  • Partnered with area businesses (EFI, Devro, Sandy Run Exterminating and ThermoKing) to provide scholarships to area students

  • Donated to the Dream Maker’s Project for special needs children at Sandy Run K-8 School

  • Helped sponsor a Turkey Shoot fundraiser for Sandy Run Calhoun Volunteer Fire Department

The individual Ruritans in this club are your neighbors, public and private business leaders, concerned citizens; they are people who care. Teresa Helms is one of these. She was inducted into the Sandy Run Ruritan Club Tuesday evening. Her husband, Lavern, was accepted as an associate member. They attend Beulah United Methodist Church and live in Swansea.

Howard Pees and Marshall Stabler were recognized during the banquet for each having 25 years of service to the community through their membership in the Sandy Run Ruritan Club.

Five Community Service Gold Awards were presented:

Social Development: Becky Starnes & Sheila Shanklin

Public Service: James Robinson (Herbert Geiger accepted the award for Mr. Robinson)

The Environment: Snooky McCullar

Citizenship and Patriotism: Howard Pees

Business and Professions: Gary Geiger

Mrs. Kay James, who has served 19 years as a Ruritan, was awarded the Sandy Run Ruritan Club’s Ruritan of the Year - 2017
