Each year, at the beginning of school, four fifth grade students at each Sandy Run Elementary School and Foundation Christian School are selected as Liberty Day Kids for the year. The Sandy Run Ruritan Club through the Citizenship and Patriotism Committee are their sponsor.
On Tuesday, March 13, 2018, these eight students visited the State House in Columbia. They were accompanied by a fifth grade teacher, the Assistant Principal from Sandy Run Elementary School, the Administrator of Foundation Christian School, parents and members of the Sandy Run Ruritan Club. They were met by Representative Russell Ott, House District 93 Representative. A tour of the State House was conducted by the tour department at the State House.
Once the House convened, Representative Ott talked about how important these students are, for learning and teaching other students about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Representative Ott then introduced a House Resolution passed in the House proclaiming, Tuesday, March 13, 2018 as Liberty Day in South Carolina. The Kids were introduced to the House by Representative Ott.
They enjoyed lunch together with Representative Ott, asking them questions about his service in the House. He talked with them about his parents, where he went to school and asked them questions pertaining to the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
This was a very meaningful day for all.
