Local Student Qualifies to Compete at World’s Largest Junior High Rodeo

Gabe Tackett of Sandy Run and a sixth-grade student at SC Virtual Charter School has earned a position on the South Carolina State National Junior High Rodeo Team and will be traveling with fellow teammates to Huron, South Dakota, in June 2018 to compete at the 14th Annual Junior High Finals Rodeo (NJHFR). He will be competing in Light Rifle Shooting, Team Roping, and Breakaway Roping events.

At 5 years of age Gabe began his rodeo career with mutton bustin’ which is smiliar to bull riding but children ride or race sheep instead. Mutton bustin’ led to calf/steer riding, roping, chute doggin, and barrels and pole bending.

He has won numerous championship awards since he began seven years ago and has used his rodeo earnings and

entreprenureal spirit to get into the bucking bull business; Gabe owns a small herd of cattle. He and his brother, Aiden who also rodeos, supplies the youth rodeo association with livestock for the local rodeo in Sandy Run at JC Arena.

By earning his way into the NJHFR, Gabe will participate with roughly 1,000 contestants from 43 states, five Canadian Provinces, Australia and Mexico, the NJHFR is the world’s largest junior high rodeo.

In addition to competing for more than $80,000 in prizes, NJHFR contestants will also be vying for more than $200,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named a National Junior High Finals Rodeo World Champion. To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20 – based on their combined times/scores in the first two rounds – to advance to the final round. World champions will then be determined based on their three-round combined times/scores.

When Gabe isn’t rodeoing he enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time with his friends from Cornerstone Christian

Center. Obviously a very busy and industrious young man!
